The title “Queen of Hip Hop” is currently a heated debate right now, but one that deserves a mention for this title is Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam, better known as M.I.A.
Her rise to the top of the game has been a fascinating one, so much so that her life is being documented in the much-anticipated documentary “Matangi/Maya/M.I.A.” The documentary, which had a premier and won an award at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, will go behind-the-scenes document M.I.A.’s life as an artist. The film will also explore her upbringing, and rise as one of hip-hop’s greatest female MCs.
She recently released a new clip from her documentary, which showcases M.I.A. going all over the world to record music on her latest LP, AIM, which was released in 2016. It’s a fascinating look inside the makings of a track, and it shows just how much music means to her.
It’s not really about the fame when it comes to M.I.A. It’s about using the power of her music to connect the cultures of the world and detail societal problems, which makes her one of the true Queens of the genre.
Check out the clip above, and watch out for “Matangi/Maya/M.I.A.,” which will be released in theaters on Sept. 28.
