Maggie Rogers has a lot going on in her blossoming career at the moment. The former NYU Music student celebrated the highly-anticipated release of her debut album late last month when Heard It In A Past Life arrived back on Jan. 18 and has since reached No. 2 on the Billboard "200 Album Sales Chart" here in the U.S. As if that weren’t enough for the breakout singer-songwriter, she recently gave America a tease of what to expect on her upcoming Heard It In A Past Life World Tour with a phenomenal debut performance on “Saturday Night Live” back in November.
So what could Ms. Rogers possibly do to top off what’s been a fantastic start to her career thus far? Why not try putting a spin on a Whitney Houston karaoke classic? That’s exactly what Rogers did during a recent appearance on the Canadian radio program, “The Strombo Show,” when she delivered an acoustic performance of one of her original singles, “Light On,” as well as a toned-down cover of Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me).”
Rogers’ cover of Houston’s 1987 anthem has actually found its way into her performance setlists, coming towards the end of her show as a way of bringing the energy down to close the night with a fan favorite. The black-and-white performance video shows Rogers singing alongside a solo acoustic guitar. The chords being strummed alongside her really act as more of a guideline for Rogers' vocals, which do most of the work by weaving in and out of the song’s familiar melodies while making it all look easy in the process. Fans can check out the video above to watch Rogers’ performance of the Whitney Houston hit in full. Her performance of “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” begins at the 23:00-minute mark.
Rogers will spend some time performing over in Europe starting later this month and continuing into March, but will return to start the North American leg of concerts on March 20 with a gig in Toronto, Ontario. The first leg of North American performances as part of her world tour is scheduled to continue into the spring before wrapping on April 17 with a sold-out show at The Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver, British Columbia.
