At this point, it’s pretty trite to say that Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmastime” is one of the worst holiday songs ever, if not the worst of all time (which is hyperbolic in itself. There aren’t any good Christmas songs, merely tolerable ones.) But people still enjoy Christmas music, and someone out there must enjoy “Wonderful Christmastime” because every year, without fail, it manages to ride back into town on its wave of dime store synths, inexcusable vocals, phoned-in lyrics, and forced cheerfulness. But when viewing the song through that critical lens, Jimmy Fallon singing an a cappella version with The Roots, McCartney himself, and the cast of “Sing” makes a lot of sense. Of course “The Tonight Show” would select “Wonderful Christmastime” for their holiday viral video. The master of late night fluff and the frothiest song in Paul McCartney’s extensive discography have long been a match made in heaven. Watch above.
