This past Halloween, Phish continued their epic musical costume tradition at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas with an audio and visual spectacle that saw the beloved Vermont jam band reinventing themselves onstage.
Whereas in the past Phish has covered artists from the classic rock canon or even performed their own, unreleased original music (read more about the history of Phish’s Halloween musical costume here), this year the band outdid themselves by combining the two, sort of. To put it simply (sort of), they made up a fake band (Kasvot Växt) and album (í rokk), took on the persona of the said fake band and composed the music for said fake album. They then performed that music in character, drenched in white, with choreography and a dazzling light show from fifth Phish member Chris Kuroda.
Words like spectacular and groundbreaking don’t really do Phish’s 2018 Halloween performance justice. You have to see it for yourself. As Jambase reported, the band recently released pro-shot footage of the first song from í rokk, “Turtles In The Clouds.” You can watch it above.
