Out on Nov. 2, comes Maddie Simpson’s latest single, “Woulda Never.” The pop star debuted, “Love Me Loud,” over the summer, introducing the world to both her personal side and her playful musicality. “Right out of the gate, I wanted people to know that my music is something they can relate to and they can sing along to it,” Simpson shared with AXS. “It has a universal message and it’s fun at the same time.”
The singer-songwriter has spent the last year-and-a-half cultivating her first collection of songs. Leading with “Love Me Loud” seemed natural as that was the track that drove each of the songs that would follow. “Woulda Never” sonically fits its predecessor but is even more personal for Simpson. “This one, I think is just more about diving deeper into who I am; as a person and as an artist as well,” she explained. “Woulda Never” is a ‘90s throwback, and in sticking with her universal theme, something you can also relate to and dance to.
The video (which premiered Nov. 1 on Billboard) was shot in one day. “The coolest thing is that it was shot on film. I didn’t have a playback, so, I didn’t get to see any of it until it was done,” Simpson says. “[It was an idea] that I had in my mind for a really long time. I wanted it to portray that we all go through something like this. That’s why I added different characters; so I could show this can happen to anyone at any age, any type of couple.”
The 20-year-old has yet to decide whether this batch of songs she’s created will turn out to be an EP or an LP. She says, whatever happens, you can certainly expect a little bit of everything; more upbeat tracks as well as some ballads.
Simpson’s main motivation stems from a desire to make something that people of all ages can identify with. “Listening to the song I hope people realize they’re not alone,” the performer says. “We all go through the same thing at one point or another. Hopefully, it can help somebody.”
