Shawn Mendes wasn't afraid to get drenched when he performed his hit "In My Blood" at the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards, which took place Aug. 20 at New York's Radio City Music Hall. The performance, which opened the show, included a staged thunderstorm that culminated with "rainwater" pouring down on Mendes and his band. Being drenched in water is a risky stunt whenever playing electric instruments live on stage. Speaking of which, Mendes' performance also stood out because, amid a slew of hip-hop and pop stars who only do vocals and dance, he was one of the few VMA performers who actually played an instrument on stage.
Although Mendes didn't win any of the three VMA nominations that he had for "In My Blood," Mendes has won several MTV Europe Music Awards, and it's probably only a matter of time before he wins a prize at the MTV VMAs. Mendes has joined a select group of artists who have performed at consecutive MTV VMAs. Mendes made his MTV VMA performance debut at the 2017 show, where he performed "There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back."
Mendes is on an extensive world tour in support of his chart-topping 2018 self-titled album. The first North American leg of the tour wraps up Oct. 14 in Austin, Texas. In 2019, he then starts the European leg of the tour in Amsterdam on March 7 and ending in London on April 19. Mendes then starts the tour's second North American leg, which kicks off in Portland, Oregon, on June 12, 2019, and wrapping up in Brooklyn, New York, on Aug. 24, 2019. Mendes then travels Down Under for shows in Australia and New Zealand, beginning in Sydney Nov. 2, 2019, and ending in Auckland, New Zealand, on Nov. 9, 2019.
