“The X Factor UK” and “America’s Got Talent” show boss Simon Cowell received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Aug. 22. Many superstar protégés turned out at the ceremony whose careers were launched by the British native music and television mogul via one of his reality singing competition shows. Many of them stood to pose for photos with Cowell in Variety’s livestream video of the grand event (Watch it above).
“American Idol” inaugural winner Kelly Clarkson reportedly gave an endearing introductory speech in which she called Cowell “the best friend you can ever have” adding “he’s honest and supportive.” Other notable artists in attendance included season 11 “America’s Got Talent” winner Grace VanderWaal, former One Direction member and impending “X Factor UK” judge Louis Tomlinson, “Idol” finalists Katharine McPhee and Adam Lambert, Leona Lewis, Fifth Harmony member Ally Brooke, and Cowell’s “America’s Got Talent” judging partners Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum and Mel B. Sony Music CEO Rob Stringer also spoke of early days with Cowell when he was "a fledgling A & R guy."
The Syco Entertainment founder and CEO's prolific career has spanned nearly three decades and he was recently dubbed "The King of Talent" on a Variety cover. Cowell's girlfriend of more than five years Lauren Silverman, their son Eric (and his famous daddy’s mini-me) and Silverman’s son from a previous relationship, Adam all posed for photos at his star. The happy family beamed in coordinating white and dark outfits and young Eric eventually sat cross-legged in the middle of his father’s star.
Cowell waxed nostalgic and became emotional during his acceptance speech. He thanked everyone from Fox, NBC (for giving the “Got Talent” franchise a home), the artists, the fans of the shows and artists, and of course, his family. He paid tribute to his parents who have both passed noting he was sure they were looking down. Then he added, “now I can look over to my son Eric and say: “Maybe one day you’ll get one of these as well.”
Cowell is currently busy filming the live show episodes of “America’s Got Talent’s” 13th season and just announced a multi-year deal to continue his dual role as judge and executive producer of the series. He’ll also return to his judging seat on “The X Factor UK” which is slated to air a two-night season 15 premiere in the U.S. on Sept. 2 and 3 on AXS.
