Taylor Swift is back with venomous vengeance. Her dark new single “Look What You Made Me Do” dropped last night along with an edgy lyric video, which drove her fans into a Twitter frenzy and sent the hashtag #LookWhatYouMadeMeDo to Top Trending status. This morning, the Grammy-winning pop star unveiled a 20-second clip of the track’s official music video on “Good Morning America.” She then posted it on Twitter, captioned with the announcement: “Official #LWYMMDvideo world premiere. Sunday 8/27 at the @vmas.”
The explosive clip builds anticipation even more and follows the track’s dark theme. It opens with a car crash featuring a pony-tailed Swift. A gold, spiked finger-nailed hand bearing a gold snake ring (presumably Swift’s), an angry-faced, diamond-laden Swift biting into a diamond necklace, the pop star swinging on a big swing in blond curl, red-lipstick fashion, followed by the “Shake It Off” singer clad in black, in a dancer lineup bearing a “take-no-prisoners” expression while mouthing lyrics. All these images flash between the words of the song title. Many are posting social media speculation the dark dance track is taking aim at Swift's controversy "Famous" controversy with Kanye West.
The VMA world premiere video debut announcement clip ends by boldly warning: “Brace for impact.” The MTV 2017 VMA Awards banner is the last image displayed.
Swifties around the world have waited almost three years for new material from their favorite singer. 1989 dropped in October 2014 and her sixth studio album, Reputation, is slated for a Nov. 10 release. Swift is known for creating dramatic hype around new music. She sent the internet into a whirlwind by blank-slating her social media accounts earlier this week and posting three cryptic snake videos.
The “Look What You Made Me Do” animated lyric video is also dark in tone, with a sort of spy-noir, spooky feel. Check out the entire “Look What You Made Me Do” music video sneak peek clip below and watch the lyric video above.
The 2017 MTV VMA Awards will air this Sunday, Aug. 27 at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT on MTV. Stay tuned to AXS for Taylor Swift updates and information.
