The Portland, Oregon-based alternative rock band, The Dandy Warhols, are preparing to embark on a feat many musical collectives fall short of throughout their musical careers. On Jan. 25, The Dandy Warhols will be releasing their tenth studio album entitled Why You So Crazy under the independent Canadian imprint, Dine Alone Records. Now, with the album a little over a week away from being officially released, the band has released one of their most innovative visuals to date for their single "Motor City Steel."
Throughout the futuristic video, the silhouettes of band members Courtney Taylor-Taylor, Peter Holmström, Zia McCabe, and Brent DeBoer in hyper-pigmentated florescent hues are superimposed on classic images from the automotive industrial revolution, mountainous landscapes, Paris, and more. The visuals are a play on the Andy Warholian imagery which syncronizes with the band's psychedelic aesthetic. The hallucinogenic symbolism of "Motor City Steel" goes hand-in-hand directly into the storytelling lyrics of the song itself. The Dandy Warhols' frontman, Courtney Taylor-Taylor sat down with the Consequence of Sound podcast to discuss the band's the story behind their lead-off single stating the following,
“Motor City Steel is a true story. I lived in a small SW Washington town from 2006 – 2014 and found this to be a fairly common occurrence. The guys generally get online to check out fishing gear, truck parts, and compound bows, etc. whereas more and more the gals check out New York, Paris, Hollywood and the like. I changed the names for the song, but when ‘Rikki’ finally did come back, it was well over a year later. They are married now and have two kids.”
