There are countless reasons why Maroon 5 should be your favorite band. The Los Angeles-based pop-rockers have carved out their spot at the top of the music industry, racking up three Grammy Awards, three American Music Awards, and four Billboard Music Awards. They've had countless successes on the charts and in record sales. But all those trophies and big numbers come from being some of the most talented musicians working today.
Adam Levine, James Valentine, Jesse Carmichael, Mickey Madden and Matt Flynn (plus sixth member PJ Morton and touring member Sam Farrar) are quite simply the best there is at what they do. Levine is one of music's most unique vocalists with an incredibly impressive range; just listen to the high notes in the band's hit "She Will Be Loved" to appreciate his talent. But he's also a multi-instrumentalist who has mastered the guitar. Most Maroon 5 concerts feature some truly jaw-dropping shredding from Levine and Valentine, who make it all look easy.
Yet you can look at Madden's bass work, or Carmichael and Morton on the keys or Flynn rocking out on the drums, or Farrar doing one of a half-dozen things and still have your mind a little blown. Each member of the band has genuine talent at their respective positions; there's not one person who doesn't take performing to another level.
Maroon 5 have backed up their musicianship with superb song crafting. Levine serves as the band's primary songwriter (though there have been an increasing number of collaborations on the band's recent records), and the band's songs are beautifully layered. While they draw listeners in with a catchy sound, underneath that fans will always find smartly written lyrics and messages about more than the usual pop themes. Just listen to the band's Grammy-winning single "Makes Me Wonder", which was not only about a failed relationship but Levine's frustration with the political situation in America. And it's still a song that fans can turn up, sing along with, and enjoy.
But the biggest reason for Maroon 5 to be your favorite band is because the band loves music just as much as you do. That's evident in their music videos like "Sugar" where they come up with fabulously unique and fun ideas that constantly surprise viewers. And it's never clearer than in every single one of their live performances, where they truly engage the audience and make them part of the show. Each Maroon 5 concert is a party to which everyone is invited and no one ever leaves without a smile. They're the kind of shows, and even the kind of records, that make audiences fall in love with music all over again. That's something special that deserves its own place in music history.
Luckily, if you somehow haven't experienced Maroon 5 yet, they are one of the headlining acts at this year's KIIS-FM Wango Tango at the StubHub Center in Carson, CA. The massive concert also features Katy Perry and Zedd and takes place on May 13. Tickets are on sale now through AXS.
