Harry Styles just might be the one to finally knock Ed Sheeran out of the top spot on the UK Official Singles Chart. Per an Official Chart update, Styles’ art-rock debut solo single “Sign of the Times” is poised to capture the top position on Friday, though it’s still a tight race, with Sheeran’s beloved Irish song “Galway Girl,” vying to overtake Styles from the No. 2 spot.
Styles has enjoyed a great positive reception to his first solo song from fans, critics, and peers alike. The single debuted on top of the Billboard + Twitter Top Tracks for the list dated April 22. Meanwhile, Sheeran has dominated the UK Official Singles Chart for 13 consecutive weeks with Divide lead single “Shape of You.” “Galway Girl” was poised to knock “Shape” out of the top spot until Styles’ crashed into the game with “Sign of the Times.”
The race is extremely tight, heading into Friday’s chart announcements. As of yesterday, “Sign of the Times” had reportedly moved 47,000 copies across all formats with “Shape of You” trailing at 39,000. Meanwhile, Sheeran still commands the No. 1 and No. 2 spots on Australia’s ARIA Singles Chart with "Shape of You" and "Galway Girl" and "Shape" still rules the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Sheeran drew massive crowds in Ireland when he recently visited Galway to shoot a music video for his wildly-popular Irish-themed track. He thanked the locals for turning out on Twitter and also celebrated playing live to huge, enthusiastic crowds in Dublin as part of his Divide World Tour.
Harry Styles is the fourth One Direction member to release solo material, behind departing band member Zayn Malik, and his 1D band mates Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson. Styles will make his live debut solo TV performance this weekend on SNL and announced his eponymous debut solo album May 12 release date and track list earlier today.
